Whether you're strapped for time during the day or you just prefer the cool night air, there's no reason you shouldn't walk your dog after dark. However, nighttime dog walking does pose its own risks and hazards, from car accidents to nocturnal predators. Thankfully, as long as you take the right precautions, you can enjoy worry-free walks with your pooch on a nightly basis. Here are four tips to follow.
1. Use reflective gear
If you plan on walking your dog at night, you should invest in a high-quality reflective collar and leash, as well as a reflective vest or jacket for yourself. Reflective gear is a great way to keep both you and your dog visible to any motorists who might be driving by. When the cars' headlamps shine on you and your dog, the reflective material will reflect the light. This will make you highly visible and reduce your risk of injury in a car-pedestrian accident.
2. Plan your route
When you're walking your dog at night, it's important to plan your route carefully. For one, make sure you stick to sidewalks. Even when you're wearing reflective gear, it's important not to take unnecessary risks with oncoming traffic. You should also be wary of walking in wooded areas after dark, even if you usually walk in nature during the day. Several nocturnal predators, such as dingoes, roam natural landscapes at night, posing a threat to both you and your dog.
3. Carry a light
You should also invest in a small flashlight or headlamp that clips right onto your clothing. A small one will suffice, provided it's equipped with an external battery pack. Not only will a flashlight increase your own visual acuity, but it will also help your dog see better. This reduces the risk of your dog stepping onto (or into) an obstacle. Bright flashlights are also good for keeping away nocturnal predators that may have strayed into urban areas.
4. Keep emergency contacts on hand
