Worried About Your Cat's Health? Signs They May Be Suffering From Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease

Blog

If your cat has been struggling with the litter box lately, and they don't seem to be feeling their best, they may be suffering from a condition known as feline lower urinary tract disease, or FLUTD. FLUTD tends to affect middle-aged cats or those who don't get outside as often as they should. However, it can also affect cats who are undergoing stressful situations or who reside in a multi-cat household. FLUTD can be especially distressing for cats, especially if they don't receive medical care for the condition. Read the information provided below. If your cat is experiencing any of the issues described below, take them to a veterinary hospital as soon as possible.

Your Cat Is Struggling to Urinate

If you're worried that your cat may have problems with their urinary tract, monitor their litter box habits. Pay close attention to the way they urinate. If your cat is struggling to urinate or seems to strain before any urine appears in the litter box, it's time to take your cat in for medical attention. Struggling to urinate may be a sign that your cat is suffering from feline lower urinary tract disease.

Your Cat Has Blood in Their Urine

If you've discovered blood in your cat's urine, it's time to visit the veterinarian. The presence of blood in the urine is an indication that your cat may be dealing with a urinary tract infection or disease. This is especially true if your cat falls into the categories listed above: middle-aged, multi-cat household, or experiencing a stressful situation at home. These situations combined could be a sign that the bloody urine is being caused by FLUTD.

Your Cat Is Focusing on Their Genitals

If your cat seems to be spending more time than usual on their personal hygiene, especially their genital region, schedule an appointment with their veterinarian. FLUTD can cause your cat to focus their cleaning on their genitals. In fact, you may notice that your cat won't clean any other part of their body when they're experiencing discomfort associated with FLUTD. To identify the problem, and to get your cat started on a treatment plan, get them to a veterinary hospital in a timely manner.

Your Cat Experiences Pain During Urination

Finally, if your cat seems to be experiencing pain when they urinate, it's important for them to be seen at a veterinary hospital immediately. Painful urination is a sure sign that your cat is suffering from a urinary tract disorder.
